Off-Campus Accommodation
At present, Griffith University Gold Coast does not have any on-campus accommodation, however, with the hundreds of houses, units, and resorts all close to the university, major shopping centers, and the gorgeous Gold Coast beaches, we are not hearing too many complaints. Whether you’re looking for a home to live in or flat mates to fill up an empty couple of rooms in your house, the accommodation service is here to help. Vacancies are listed by students, staff, and the general community, which leaves a great range of houses, flats, and high-rises for you to choose from. And when you look at some of the beachfront high-rises on offer, the sky is the limit! Come and see the Accommodation Officer or look at the notice board located on the outside wall of the Student Guild building.
Currently, students pay approximately $150.00 per week for full board and from $90.00 per week for a room in a house or unit with use of all facilities, in areas close to the university. Rent is more expensive in areas surrounding and including Surfers Paradise. Most of these units are on the beach, in the heart of the Gold Coast and usually with resort style facilities. The rent is approximately $150.00 per week for a room in a shared apartment and from $300.00 per week for a 2 bedroom fully furnished unit.
Homestay
Homestay is accommodation offered to international students by families who live within commuting distance of Griffith University's Nathan, Mt Gravatt, and Southbank campuses (Queensland College of Art and Queensland Conservatorium of Music). Homestay enables students to gain an insight into Australian life and offers a unique opportunity to experience Australian culture first hand by participating in the daily routine of the host family's life.
Homestay students are met at the airport by representatives from Griffith University and, during their first days in Australia, they are given an orientation session, which explains the culture and customs of Australian life.
Host families take an active interest in their students and assist them to assimilate into their new environment. This helps to facilitate a smooth transition into the students' formal studies.
In 2005, the cost of homestay accommodation is $175.00 per week, with four weeks payable in advance ($700.00). This includes breakfast, dinner, and a packed lunch if required. Students are responsible for the costs of washing, ironing, telephone, and transport.
On-Campus Accommodation
Set amidst natural bushland, the six Griffith University colleges provide clean, comfortable, and safe accommodation for over 900 students. About a third of the residential population is made up of international students who have come from over 30 different countries. As part of a supportive, culturally diverse community, you will have an ideal opportunity to learn about and to share cross-cultural experiences.
Types of Accommodation
Catered Single Rooms
Bellenden Ker College on the Nathan Campus and Mt Gravatt College on the Mt Gravatt Campus each provide catered single rooms for Griffith University students. Each college member has his or her own lockable bedroom along a corridor. College members share bathroom facilities and common rooms, and eat meals in the college's dining room.
Flat Style Self-Catered Rooms
Three colleges on the Nathan campus offer flat style accommodation to undergraduate students: Barakula College, Girraween College, and Kinaba College. Within these colleges, individual student rooms are arranged as 8, 7, 6, or 4 bedroom fully furnished flats. College members have their own lockable bedroom and share a kitchen, dining/lounge room, and bathrooms facilities with their flat mates. College members within a flat make arrangements among themselves concerning the purchase of food, preparation of meals, and cleaning.
